Three simple things I shared as a guest speaker for students aspiring for success and excellence in studies and upcoming career. To get to know themselves and the importance of their uniqueness. To discover what God has given us as his people and commitment to be better. And to have a heart of generosity being a vessel of blessings.
Recently I had the chance and honor to be guest speaking to young aspiring accountancy student from the college is use to teach accounting. It’s already been more than a year since my stint as a instructor but it was just like meeting old relatives that you haven’t seen for a while. Here is the main thoughts I shared to the students, though edited a bit for it not too lengthy. I believe even if you’re not a student these thoughts contribute much in the development of character and discipline.
Know Yourself and Embrace Your Uniqueness
I remember every first day of class some of the initial things I implore from my students are: First, Why they took up the course. Second, Hobbies and pass time. For me its a good start to get to know them even in a very shallow way. It’s a chance for me to get to see common interest and relate more with them. Getting ideas when doing future discussion to where to get examples and Illustrations. Emphasizing and embracing the idea to them that everybody is unique in their own special ways. Encouraging them to discover how God engineered them to be something to be proud of. Strengths and Weakness. The limitations of thier drive and motivation. Where they are most effective; in a group or solo. God has already provided us with all the tools, it's now up to us to discover it and continually hone it. Every individual has something indispensable to contribute and all those put together only He can see the endless possibilities.
"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ." – Ephesians 1:3
Commitment to Learn and Constant Improvement
Strengths are to be practiced continuously until it becomes second nature. Practice on weaknesses until it becomes a strength. To continually work on some new skill sets and tickle the creative genius inside us, generating our edge over others who complacently are satisfied with mediocre outputs. To improve with usage with passage of time. Budgeting of resources. That everything we put into is an investment and return shall be reaped for the patient and diligent. Tweeted by Nike and I like this, "Might maybe strong but commitment is stronger.". Malcolm Gladwell shares in his book Outliers, "To be good at something you have to practice at least 10,000 hours". So I tell these students, if they are competent in solving go and find other books and resources that offers more challenge. If weak in analysis or in written comprehension, read more and more. "Self-discipline is when your conscience tells you to do something and you don't talk back." - WK Hope
"Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress." - 1 Timothy 4:15
We Make a living with What we Get. But Make a Life from What we Give.
Giving always has that special power to transform us. Of course copying/giving of answers is defeats the discipline, it's not generosity that's actually robbing someone and being counter productive. True giving has the heart of letting the recipient lighten their burdens, lives being better and enjoying the simple pleasures of letting them know they are appreciated. So, Be someone you want to meet and give something you want to received. In the end who you are today is the product of the things that we received and gave. It's not a measure how big or small that makes giving special, it's teaching our spirit that we are blessed and a blessing to others.
"In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” - Acts 20:35
